Default Top end rebuild 98 Grizzly 600, hone the cylinder or not?

howdy folks. Well I'm a rookie! I am rebuilding the top end of my 98 - 600 Grizzly... wondering do I "have" to hone the cylinder and replace the piston? is it a absolute must to do these two things? Can I just replace the rings and gaskets and be done?

The machine was putting out white smoke after a loud Pop.... I'm in Georgia and was mudding pretty hard at the time.

The white smoke makes me think you blew a head gasket. You'll have to take it apart and inspect everything. As far as the piston and cylinder go, you need to measure them to determine if they're useable or not. if everything is within spec you can probably get away with rings and a hone...yes you need to hone the cylinder when installing new rings but that shouldn't be very expensive. If you find the cylinder and/or piston are too badly worn you're looking at a bore and hone with a new piston kit. Good luck

if i had the cylinder off, it would be getting honed.
mic the cylinder and compare to specs. then decide weather you need a piston, rings, etc.
