My grizz had a stange engine noise which I though was caused by loose valves. Well I had the valves done and the noise persists. Sounds sort of like knocking in the engine...Am I facing major engine repair?
It's still running awesome...especially after I had the clutch cleaned and new belt..I can feel the difference in throttle response but haven't haad a chance to test top-end speed
I would have to hear it to really know, if it is a slight knock it is normal, that is a pretty big piston inside a pretty big barrel so some noise is normal. What kind and what weight of oil are you using? You may want to try a 15-40 or 20-40 weight and see if it still persists? Sorry I don't know what else to tell you with out hearing it........Irv
What year? How many miles? I'm just gonna be tearing mine down this week to get to the bottom of the same exact question. Seem to be rpm and load dependant but not consistent? Mine is. Sound like left (while sitting on) side of cylinder? Mine does. I was hoping it was valves, too, but now much less sure
is your engine brake working ok? i had a knock in mine and it was somethin to do with the clutch , everytime i gave it some gas it would knock when the rpms were goin down.
HI, I know it had been a long time since your post, but you are the only one I can find that explains my exact symptoms. Did you ever figure it out. Frankd
Actually, my engine brake (One-Way bearing) doesn't work too good. Whenever I go down steep hills at low speed, the engine brake disengages (at approx 10km/hr) and transmission goes to neutral and with a bit of throttle it kicks back on
is it a loud knock or more like a ping or maybe a loud click. when my grizzly idles, I hear a distinctive high frequency clicking sound. my valves were just done (i did them myself) and I triple checked everything. it runs like a champ and if I listen closely to the engine, that clicking sound does not seem to be coming from the valves. In fact, the valves sound normal and fairly quiet.
It almost sounds like it's in tune with the exhaust note. I have yet to figure out what this is .... but it may be similar to your problem. It could also be a rattle or something in the exhaust.
Knocking is the best word to describe it. I brought it to the dealer today and the mechanic says it's the crank shaft...Ouch. Anybody can tell me how you can know for sure...is there a fool proof way to prove whether it's the crankshaft or not?
I'm still taking my clutch apart again tomorow to check on the one way bearing.
Ouch is right, he must mean the bearings supporting the crank shaft? There is no way of telling if it is the crank unless he had it out and it was sitting in his hands. Have you tried a thicker oil yet? I would dump some 20W 40 in there and see if it goes away? If it doesn't it could be something different like your clutch? It is a pretty cheap way to find out compared to a complete tear down. Good Luck........Irv
If it is like a knock knock knock noise that tells me that it could be the big end bearing (con rod bearing onto the crank shaft) only way to know for sure is to strip it down and look at the colour of the bearings, if they have patches of colour on them then they are shot and you may need to get your crank re-ground as well.
Thanks folks!
The Grizz is currently in the "operating room" My mechanic and I took the engine out of the bike this morning. He's taking the engine apart as we speak. Will keep you posted
Turns out it was the connecting rod causing the "knocking" I put in the heavy duty raptor rod. Also bought the big bore kit but no one in town was able to bore the cylinder so i didn't intall it.
The grizz is back in shape now, running good, just drove arounf the house a bit, runs tight. I'm supposed to ride tuesday or wednesday, i have to break it in again so I won't be riding too hard...
Bad news...went for ride today...the mechanic must not have tightened the oil drain plug enough and it fell off while I was driving...the engine seized...aaaarrrrggghhh
Great news agian Grizzfan! I would say you definately got lucky for a change! Starky, what do you mean, low oil cut-off? Do all grizzlies have this feature?............Irv
I was wondering about that too....never heard of it but I figure there must be someting cause I literally ran out of oil and the bike just stalled but didn't seize. Probably the 20w50 helped.
I did 100kn (60miles) and it runs great. There was lots of mud...and forgot the camera at home...there were great picture moments missed
Ya, they have a low oil cut-off so when you are too low on oil it will shut off. Usually you will get a low oil light way before that, but if you were to knock a hole in the case and not know it the engine would see there is no oil and shut itself off before the engine froze up.
Thanks Starky, I didn't know they had a low oil cut off, that is good to know. It sure beats a full seizure..........Irv
