I spent three days riding the southern Black Hills--south and a little west of the town of Custer. The region is quite hilly and mostly tree covered. Some areas have burned over the years and are barren--it's so dry in the southern Hills that reforestation takes a long time. We rode about 170 miles on mostly minimally maintained old logging roads. We left the roads a couple times to climb deforested hills--the view is spectacular!

It was DRY! They really need good rains this Spring! Dust on all the trails was pretty bad.

Lots of rocks and sticks on the trails--I ruined a tire and had to replace it. Be prepared.

Overall, excellent area to ride!

It's about 10 hours from Hudson, Wisconsin, about 8 1/2 hours from Albert Lee, if you're coming straight over on 90.

I've heard that there is also excellent riding in the Deerfield Lake area in the Central Hills. I'll be working on an overnight into that area--my friend out there recommends taking camping gear on the quads and staying awhile.

Of course, that means carrying LOTS of gas. . . .
